Source Code > Inception

I dont get out much, and when I do, it's rarely to the movies. So when I do go, I try to make it count. I try to see movies that I am interested in seeing, as oppose to movies that happen to be playing at the time I want to go to the theater. Last night, I made the decision to watch Source Code, and I was rewarded with an intelligent, multi-layered, and most importantly well-balanced film.

I'm not a film critic, nor do I have any desire to review the film, but I'd like to share a few thoughts about Source Code and its similarities to Inception, without giving too much away.

The film, at its core, deals with some heavy philosophical and ethical themes, much in the same vein as last year's blockbuster Inception, although Source Code take a more laissez-faire approach to how the audience interprets them. In my opinion, Inception was overly complicated and confusing and tried to pack too much into one movie. Conversely, Source Code contains all the more important and interesting elements of Inception, but instead of spelling out how deep and complicated the themes presented are (like in Inception) Source Code merely alludes to them throughout the film, and then ties them together by the films conclusion. I found this style to be far more effective in terms of emotional impact and even comprehension. I walked out of Inception not fully understanding anything I'd just witnessed, although I was entertained throughout. Source Code was not only entertaining, but afterward I was thinking more about the story and not trying to wrap my head around it.

I highly recommend Source Code, especially if you liked Inception and are finally ready to admit you didn't understand it either.
