Ryan Dunn (left) hours before his fatal car accident. Jackass.
It's 2011, jackass. With all due respect to the family and friends of recently deceased daredevil Ryan Dunn, if he was drinking and driving, he brought this on himself. Famed movie critic Roger Ebert tweeted after hearing the news
“Friends don’t let jackasses drink and drive.”
And I couldn't agree more, but too soon? Bam Margera thinks so:
“I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of shit roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents.”
“About a jackass drunk driving and his is one, fuck you! Millions of people are crying right now, shut your fat fucking mouth!”
That's all well and good. Mourn the loss of your friend. But Roger Ebert is 100% correct. If Dunn hadn't made his last idiotic decision to drink and drive, he'd be alive, simple as that. I don't think that Ebert is being disrespectful. The millions crying right now should know that this jackass killed himself and a friend, and is lucky to have not involved other innocent bystanders in his stupidity. Team Ebert, mothafucka.
I don't have to sell you on Radiohead. You should already know they're amazing. And here is a new song/video that was not included on The King of Limbs. Staircase.
"DTA - Dont never trust nobody!" - Stone Cold Steve Austin, 1997
Okay so Stunning Steve fucked up the quote in the heat of the moment, but the message remains the same. Trust. Can you really trust anyone? Doubt it, but you can mostly trust some. Well very few, and not all the time. Wait, okay, some people in some situations but for the most part. Almost but no? Nah nigga, Stone Cold had it right. Don't trust anybody. I guess my man Drizzy ain't the only one with trust issues.
A wise man once replied when asked how to mastermind a great performance. Simple as that. No wonder Katy Perry's latest video does not contain a choreographed dance routine. In fact, the singer does more acting than dancing in this video, which not-coincidentally is her best video yet, and one of the best of the year so far.
Jim Carrey is the greatest comedic actor of all time. If not all time, then certainly of my time. And he continues to prove that his comedic talent has no limit, continuously crafting well-thought out, hilarious segments on various late shows throughout the years, in addition to his movies. While recently he hasn't been as commercially (or critically) successful as some other major comedians, Carrey recently returned to form last year with a daring a controversial role in I Love You Philip Morris, which is one of the best movies I've ever seen. When others are relying on the same shit that they've been doing for years (see Sandler, Adam) Carrey continues to take risks and evolve as an actor. Additionally, while most others would be content with the monotonous choreographed conversation late-night hosts offer, Carrey always thinks outside the box and adds something more to his appearances, and last night on Letterman was no exception. Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Avenues all lined with trees, Picture me and then you start watching, Watching forever, forever, Watching love grow
Really enjoying Suck it And See, although I'm not a huge fan of the album title. I feel dirty just by typing it. Anyways, this song immediately made an impression on me.
When the heat starts growing horns She's thunderstorms
At the risk of sounding uncool, I'll admit something to you, dear reader. I fucking love pop music. Well, no I shouldn't say that. I mean, I have a certain taste in music, and it's generally not pop-oriented, but I can't deny a good song when I hear it, just because of it's "genre." And, I'm a sucker for a good pop song. No, no, lets just leave the "pop" part out, I'm a sucker for a good song. Yeah, that's better.
There are few songs I never tire of hearing. This is one of them. Band of Horses - The Funeral To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they were
An old art teacher once told me that true art, like literature, is simply about conveying information. There's no limit to how much or how little "information" you present, but you're either successful or you're not. Simple as that.
Does the audience understand what you're trying to communicate when they view your work? If so yes, and if not, well then please try again.
Sometimes less is more.
I'm reminded of this when I look at the breathtaking simplicity of Olly Moss' "Paper Cuts."
Love this song. Love the video. Pulp is so underrated. Is it me or did the art of music videos attain perfection in 1995? Ah well. Enjoy!(after the jump)
Here's Bon Iver covering Bonnie Raitt's classic "I Cant Make You Love Me" which is the ultimate unrequited love/break-up song. I actually prefer this version to some other covers of the song I've come across through the years by George Michael and Prince, respectively. This performance is from Jimmy Fallon last week and it's certainly made a fan out of me (Of Bon Iver, not Fallon. Never Fallon). What says you about it? Listen below and prepare to get all emotional.
I can't make you love me if you don't You can't make your heart feel something it won't
And here in the dark in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no, you won't
And I can't make you love me
If you don't
New music from The Wizard, Kid Cudi. It's from his upcoming experimental foray into alternative rock ala Lupe and Japanese Cartoon.
And to be honest, it's fucking weird. I hope it's a grower and not a shower because I'm not really feeling it on the first few listens. Oh well. At least the Cudder man is trying new, different things musically which has to be commended. But maybe he should have stuck with what brought him to the dance. I duno. You be the judge.
In related news, Cudi will be in Toronto July 30th at the Molson Amphitheater. You better believe I'll be there, although I hope he leaves "Perfect Is The World" off the set list.
*Optimistic Update!* I'm on/about the 6th listen and I'm still not sure what Cudi's trying to say but the song actually is starting to grow on me. Cowards run awayyyyy. ah hah. Cowards run awaaaaaaay. It would work better in the traditional Cudi style, but it's not horrible as it is.
